Hillary Does a Flip-Flop on Ethanol, Lands on Feet

Hillary Clinton was in town yesterday, touring Pioneer Hi-Bred, one of the biggest players in corn-based ethanol research in the world. In 2000, she vehemently opposed an ethanol mandate on the coasts. Now that it's required due the ban of MTBE in gasoline, New York state blends more ethanol in its gasoline than Iowa. This from the Des Moines Register: Clinton, who was elected to the Senate in 2000, had voted during her first term against measures that called for requiring all pumps to offer ethanol-blended gasoline or for significant increases in the annual production of ethanol. But now that New York has four ethanol production plants in development, fears of higher fuel costs associated with transporting the additive have diminished, she said. Clinton supports incentives for corn-based ethanol, but also advocates increasing spending to develop technology to produce ethanol from grasses and forest waste. Last week, she proposed an energy plan built around eliminating tax breaks for oil companies and requiring them to spend some of their profits on alternative energy development. Good recovery, senator. When Bill Bradley flip-flopped on ethanol, all he did was make a lame excuse about "representing his east coast constituents" which he did very nicely by voting for tax breaks for pharmacaeutical companies.
